Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this. For an example, check out Connect for iPhone and the integration we have with contact syncing through our iPhone app. Another example is the INQ1 phone with Facebook integration (the first so-called ‘Facebook Phone’). The people mentioned in the story are working on these projects. A report in the Wall Street Journal quotes the CEO of Best Buy as saying the iPad is cannibalizing notebook sales at Best Buy outlets by “as much as 50%.”
The article details how retailers are adjusting their buying plans for the holiday season, with greater emphasis on mobile devices such as smartphone and tablets, and entertainment consoles, and less emphasis on large TVs and desktop or notebook computers. The iPad, along with smartphones running from Apple or from various vendors running the Android operating system from Google, are currently the market leaders.
“People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives,” Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn told the Journal.
Apple last announced iPad sales in June 2010, saying 3 million had been sold since the product’s April 2010 introduction. A significant upgrade of the iPad OS is scheduled for November, which will further fuel demand for the device.

Google announced last Friday that the Chrome browser will use the hardware acceleration to perform some tasks faster. Thus, the company follows in the footsteps of its rivals, Microsoft, Apple and Mozilla, which already use this resource in their browsers Internet Explorer 9, Safari 5.0 and Firefox 4, respectively, with the first and last are still on versions beta.

Chrome faces one more challenge in relation to its rivals in time to use hardware acceleration. Once these processes have access to the operating system only in special circumstances, you need to create another process that allows access to the APIs necessary to exploit the hardware.

A report by the TechCrunch site claims, based on reliable sources, that Cisco has made an offer to buy Skype before its initial public offering (IPO).

Cisco is a virtual synonym for network hardware, but it also has expanded its business aggressively beyond the routers and switches. Earlier this year the company completed the acquisition of Tandberg to strengthen its position in videoconferencing, and is one of the leading competitors in the arena of unified communications.

Skype – one of the best known brands in VoIP communications – could provide technology and intellectual property of value to Cisco’s strategy. VoIP is the basis of unified communications, and Skype could provide useful tools for Cisco to compete with Microsoft and other rivals in unified communications and avert new rivals like Google – with its Gmail service Google Voice.

An animation made with data from observatories and amateur astronomers shows the location of all known asteroids in the solar system.

The video begins with the year 1980 and will gradually increase the number of points as the years pass and make new discoveries made.

The new asteroids appear flashing white and appear to “follow” the Earth‘s rotation, they then get a color that indicates their closeness: those that cross the orbit of the planet appear in red, others arriving by less (1.3 times the distance from the Sun to Earth) are yellow, all other, more distant, appear in green.

The video was created with data compiled by the Lowell Observatory. The two numbers on the left represent the year and the number of discovered asteroids, respectively. In 2010, the count of the heavenly bodies is at 530 091.

It is worth remembering that NASA, the American Space Agency, has a monitoring program called Near Earth Object, as the name implies, keeps track of all objects ever detected near the Earth.

Doctoral student Sybel Saska, Institute of Chemistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Araraquara campus, was honored during the 88th International Association for Dental Research General Session, held in July in Barcelona.

Sybel, featuring Doctoral Scholarship from FAPESP, was among the top five for the work entitled New [bacterial cellulose-collagen]-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite with growth factors for bone regeneration.

She received a cash prize awarded by the German company Heraeus poster presented, which consists in developing a new biomaterial for bone regeneration.

According to Reinaldo Marchetto, Professor of Chemistry Institute of Unesp, Araraquara campus, and lead researcher of biomaterial research brings important advances in relation to currently existing in the market.

The biomaterial is composed of some components of the bones, such as collagen (protein) and hydroxyapatite (inorganic agent) deficient in calcium, and bacterial cellulose membrane.

Synthesized by bacteria of the genus Gluconacetobacter, cellulose served as a biomaterial matrix to generate the structure with nanometer (billionth of a meter), since the bacteria synthesize cellulose fibers in a web of wires of that size.

The production of bacterial cellulose has been used in several areas. A major application is in use as a temporary substitute of human skin in cases of burns and other medical or dental procedures.

Intel and Infineon to announce an agreement on the future of the wireless business of the German company this weekend, said three people familiar with the matter.

The agreement will likely occur over the next two days, the sources told Reuters on Friday, adding that negotiations are close to the outcome with some outstanding details.

It was unclear whether the agreement would involve the sale of the entire drive, generating more than 1 billion euros (1.27 billion dollars), or just a stake in the business.

Both companies declined to comment on the matter.

Headquartered in Neubiberg near Munich, Infineon had reported this month that it is in advanced talks with interested parties in the future of mobile chip unit, whose revenue in fiscal year 2008/2009 stood at 917 million and now represents 30 percent of total revenue of the group.

The deal was in the red for years, but the chief executive of Infineon, Peter Bauer, who took over the company in 2008, managed to reverse the operations.

The company is the fifth place in the industry for memory devices, right behind the giant Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Broadcom, and provides chips for manufacturers like Nokia, LG and Apple.
